It is well established that there are large individual differences among African American English (AAE) speakers in producing Standard English (SE) and AAE forms. The frequency of occurrence of AAE production, as with most other types of verbal interactions, will depend on the interlocutor(s), the situation, and the topic, among other variables. For both diagnostic and intervention purposes, it is clinically useful for the speech-language pathologist to have a quick checklist that will aid in determining frequency of occurrence of AAE grammatical forms. The following rating scale is one that we have found useful in both our clinical work and our research endeavors. This rating scale is designed to facilitate the clinician’s ability to readily determine to what degree a child is producing selected AAE grammatical forms.
