Culture is known to influence health beliefs and practices, including the use of alternative medicine. As of 1997, 4 in 10 Americans used at least one form of alternative medicine, an increase from 3 in 10 Americans in 1990 (Eisenberg et al., 1998). It is estimated that approximately one-third of the U.S. population used at least one alternative form of health practice with the highest frequency of occurrence among adults ranging in age from 35 to 49 years old (Eisenberg et al., 1993, 1998). While belief systems are shared among people within a culture, there is also increased information transmission regarding home remedies in libraries and homeopathic stores and on the Internet.
