Autumn is upon us now. The ASHA Convention is coming up soon. And in this issue of Perspectives, we are concluding a four-issue series on cultural and linguistic diversity through the lifespan. The October Perspectives addresses the age group of older adults.
In the first article, Dr. Loraine Obler, at City University of New York Graduate Center, presents a fascinating examination of the research in healthy bilingual adults, healthy, monolingual older adults, and monolingual and bilingual individuals with aphasia. Dr. Obler has studied multilingualism and group differences in adult communication.
Next, Dr. José Centeno, at St. John's University, directs attention to the relevance of bilingualism questionnaires for personalized treatment of bilingual individuals with aphasia. As he notes, the importance of one's history with bilingualism and language use is clearly accepted in the realm of assessing and treating the pediatric bilingual population. In his article, he discusses the development and implementation of systematic bilingualism questionnaires to gather pre-morbid experiential insights on bilinguals in order to positively impact language recovery.
