Welcome to the first issue of SIG 14's Perspectives for 2011. In this issue, our attention is on the topic of health care literacy and the policy work designed to improve patient-provider communication in order to affect positive outcomes for patients. Patient-centered care requires effective communication that is responsive to cultural and linguistic diversity as well as a broad range of communication challenges.
Clearly, as speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists, we serve an essential role in this initiative, as is underscored through the ASHA vision “to make effective communication, a human right, accessible and achievable for all.” Though the current dialogue addresses health literacy and patient communication within the healthcare system, the guidance is applicable to most settings in which SLPs and audiologists work.
