I am extremely pleased to don the mantle of SIG 14 Coordinator for the 2012–2014 term. My name is Joyce L. Harris, Professor Emeritus of Communication Sciences and Disorders at The University of Texas at Austin and Life Member Emeritus and Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). My research, teaching, and print scholarship reflect my long-standing interest in communication phenomena in persons from culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Therefore, to serve as SIG 14's new Coordinator is a singular highlight of my career.
Succession to every office begins at the point at which one's predecessor left off. I am fortunate indeed to find our SIG14 community in such a robust and vibrant state of well-being. For that, we all can thank the former Coordinator, Nancy Lewis, for her constructive and committed leadership. I am certain that Nancy would be the first to share her laurels with members of her leadership team. Likewise, my efforts as the new Coordinator are bolstered by a very capable Coordinating Committee that includes Kathryn Kohnert, the new Associate Coordinator; Mark Guiberson, the continuing Editor of Perspectives; Danai Fannin, the Continuing Education (CE) Content Manager; Joy Coulis, the manager of our online community; and Machid Namazi, the newly elected Coordinating Committee member. As leaders of SIG 14, Communication Disorders and Sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Populations, we are committed to further coalescing our community, fulfilling our stated purpose (see www.asha.org/SIG/14/About-SIG-14/), and championing the exciting transitions already underway for all ASHA SIGs.
